Georgioupolis is a tourist resort located 38km east of Chania and 21km west of Rethymnon. It is a small seaside town, built in a green valley, full of rivers and springs. Residents, apart from tourism, are engaged in beekeeping and agriculture.
The Almyros river flows into the city, and before its exodus, a very important biotope, the Elmos of Almyros, is formed.
Typical of the village is the road and the central square with its many eucalyptus and cypress trees. On the square there are tavernas, cafes and tourist shops. At the exit of Almyros, you will see the picturesque port with the boats. However, the trademark of the city is the large pier that starts from the harbor and ends up on a small plateau, where the beautiful white chapel of Agios Nikolaos is built. The Church seems to be floating in the sea.

Lake of Kournas

Kournas Lake is the only natural lake in the entire Mediterranean and the island of Crete, as well as the southernmost lake of Europe, and is set amidst a magnificent scenery, surrounded by high mountains and lush olive groves. It is very close to the village of Kournas, 2.5km south of Georgioupolis beach, 1080m long, 880m wide and 22.5m deep.
Its name comes from the Arabic word for the "lake" and "bath". In ancient texts it is referred to as Korissia, while it is believed that there was a nearby sanctuary of Athena Korissia.
Lake Kournas is a favorite destination for visitors to the island, as well as locals. It is an ideal place for relaxing and strolling. In the summer, a walk around the lake, with its blue-green waters, usually lasts less than an hour (3.5 km).
On one side of the lake there are cafes and taverns, overlooking the lake. Next to the cafes, in the summer, with water receding, small white sandy beaches are formed where guests can swim. The beaches also feature umbrellas.
We also rent water bikes for a ride on the lake. The bike ride is an ideal choice for the afternoon, as the colors of the water are wonderful and the calm of the lake enchanting.
